You can do this easily with Referenced Document (RD) fields. Basically, you
create a blank document to hold your index. In this document, you put RD
fields that point to each file in your book. You then add an index field to
this document and update the field. Word will scan each document listed in
the RD fields and buld the index.

Word's online hlep describes the procedure.

For more help on Word and working with long documents, I HIGHLY recommend
Jean Weber's book Taming Microsoft Word. Go to
