TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
As a group of professionals, we should consider of people's feelings.
Pointing out other people's mistakes in a condescending manner is not what
I would expect from this group. I recently joined as well, and have found
everyone to be very helpful. However, in reading other e-mail threads, I
am appalled on how people are treating each other. It surprises me when I
come across technical writers' pompous attitudes because it goes against
the foundation of what we are here to do - communicate effectively and
concisely. I come across condescending attitudes when interacting with
engineers or programmers. If I don't understand their "tech-nese", it
makes people feel superior. They are not communicating effectively to
someone that is outside their circle.
I am currently trying to be more proactive than reactive. I find it easier
to not react to every e-mail that can be interpreted into being nasty, and
just extract the information I need.
If I did get offended to every thing that came my way, I would be angry all
day long! It is hard to absorb criticism (constructive or not) when it is
not asked for. (oops - preposition at the end of a sentence, but hey! you
get the hint!)
Again, I appreciate the great feedback I am getting from this group, but I
am shocked at the insensitivity of other people's feelings.
