Well Annika,

I would say a "system is a group of independent but interrelated elements
comprising a unified whole". A system integrates all these elements and
works to attain a certain result.

If it is smaller, yet comprises of discrete units, then it is definitely a
"System"- Maybe your colleague would be comfortable with the word "unit".

It pretty much conveys the same meaning, right? Opinions, anyone?
