As someone else said: earn it. Show that you're reliable, flexible, and capable, and know something about the technology. So many tech-writers show that they're none of these things that others have an understandably jaundiced view of the profession that it takes time to prove that you're different.

One tactic I've found useful is to meet some small but important milestone as soon as possible in a new job. That gives everyone a good impression that you can build on.
