Any thoughts?

The ability to apply for unemployment, as I understand it, is not a moral decision, but a legal one. If you have been working on a true contracting job (1099 vs. W-2) for long enough, you are probably not eligible for unemployment benefits. That's one of the subtler downsides of contract work. On the other hand, if you were a W-2 employee of a contracting agency, you should be eligible for unemployment compensation.

I've been on unemployment once, and it was very helpful -- both the money and the Job Service. And the need to show attempts at finding a job were pretty good for keeping me motivated to do a reasonable amount of job searching.
