Sounds to me like Mr. Fineman is a twit. Throw a large overcoat and a derby
on him and toss him into the classic Monty Python skit and he'd be good to
go! *vbg*

I sincerely hope this article didn't sway anyone against high-speed access
and firewalls. Contrary to his wife's opinion, a software-based firewall is
just fine and dandy for home recreational use. If you don't have anything
"valuable" to protect, hackers ain't gonna be pounding at your machine.

I have cable, and I have software for a firewall. Works great. Why? Because
I have nothing of value on my home machine, so no one really has a reason to
hit my machine. Sure, there may be kids out there looking to kill some time
by hacking into worthless machines, but a software firewall will, 99% of the
time, thwart them. For that other 1%... well, I do confess that I am going
to pick up a physical firewall, as I'll be using my home connection for work
purposes from time to time. BUT, that is just extra security for me and more
so for my employer. If all you're doing is going online to surf and download
MP3s (like the author of that opinion), you're fine with software for a
firewall. ZoneAlarm is good. Black Ice is good. And if you feel more secure
by spending $30 at CompUSA, Norton Firewall is good.

Oh well. Going back to work now. :)
