Given my involvement in the prior debates on this subject with Andrew Plato
and like thinkers on one side and me and a lot of others on the other, I
can't not rise to this bait and add my $.01 (= $A.02). (Check Techwrl
archives for the subject "real value")

I'd love to rant, but thanks to the success of our single source maintenance
documentation solution for the ANZAC Frigates, we have generated a lot of
interest from other Australian Defence clients in doing more of the same. I
am currently in the midst of answering an RFT for an integrated fleet
management system, with several other possible clients lined up asking for
demos.

The system we used is an Australian product, Structured Information Manager
(SIM) which I actually believe to be the best in the world for large scale
solutions - http://www.simdb.com. It already has several US users and is
supported by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) - contact
details on the SIM site.

My case study paper on the ANZAC project was published in Technical
Communication, and can be accessed electronically via the Tenix website:
http://www.tenix.com/PDFLibrary/91.pdf/. We are also working to apply the
single sourcing technology to legal documentation (see
http://www.legalxml.com and http://www.speedlegal.com) for managing Defence
RFT and contract documentation. More information can be found by searching
Google for [SIM "ANZAC SHIP"].

One of these days I will do a Techwrl note on reducing/managing redundant
content via single sourcing from master documents, versus virtual documents
sharing content, versus managing redundant information as entities.

If anyone has specific questions I will try to answer them after Sept 19th
(our tender deadline).
