I stand corrected. They do have a version for Linux. But, if your compatriot is using the Version 6 of Stuffit, or at least 5.5, then they should have full ability to use gzip format.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I'm receiving files using Stuffit on
my Linux machine, but maybe I can persuade the senders to use .gz or
.tar. It's been so long since I used Stuffit that I'd forgotten (if I
ever knew) that it supported other compression methods.
