The paperless college is indeed a great idea, but only if approached
carefully. Rensselaer seems to be doing it right. The "laptop program" was
piloted just as I was leaving, and it was met with great criticism. Now,
it's a way of life on campus. Rather than toting backpacks full of books
(mine weighed in at close to 100 lbs. at times - weighed it once at the
gym), students are going to class with a Targus sport pack on their backs,
armed with laptops, PDAs, and Crosspads. It really *is* amazing, and the
cost of the laptop over the course of a student's 4 years there is
comparable to the amount they'd spend on books and supplies... and every
student HAS a computer - no more waiting for a seat in a crowded computer
lab (except in the case of needing specific task-driven machines, but those
needs are very limited). Granted, paper materials are still used, but the
amount and need for toting the books around has decreased.

Also, the "paperless" college is a great idea. My daughter is a
senior in high school and many of those kids are going to have
back problems in later years from the weight of physical books
they've been carrying in their backpacks.
