Sarah,

The US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) has a highly regarded graduate school
that offer course in a wide variety of subjects, including Technical
Writing. The classes are open to anyone and there is no admission
procedure, so you can just register for a class. In fact, a class begins
tonight at 6 p.m and another one starts in January. I don't know where the
BLS office is and how convenient it would be for you to get to but the
class is held in a building one block from the Mall. A person in my office
who is thinking about becoming a technical writer has enrolled in the
class.

Course Description:

Technical Writing WRIT3305E-C29
Learn how to target an audience, work with technical data sources, work
with and without an editor, make documents more readable and more useable,
handle review cycles and get approvals. Become familiar with testing and
feedback mechanism, publication standards and specifications, managing a
writing project and scheduling and handling multiple tasks. Practical
aspects of writing for publications aimed at specialized audience are
covered. The course emphasizes types of documents that participants work
with in their jobs. Exercises in rewriting documents and creating new
materials are assigned. ACE College Credit Recommendation Service
