This has not been my experience. I am currently developing a 210+ page
manual in a single Word file. The file has large numbers of hyperlinks, at
least 40 large graphics, a generated TOC and Index, and has never crashed or
become corrupted. I can also PDF the file without error.

I am using a well-designed template (my own), but I don't think that is my
only reason for success. Before I released the template for our company
use, I stress tested it, using a file of over 500 pages and over 100
graphics. Still no problem.

My system is Word 2000 on Windows NT with 128 KB RAM. Nothing unusual.

I'm told that the Microsoft Technical Support desk says they do not
recommend Word for documents over 25 pages. Plainly, it was never
intended to handle book-length projects.
