Sounds like a fun challenge, Virginia!
Photoshop is a great tool for creating graphics -- it complements Dreamweaver well.
I don't know of any photoshop classes in your area...
If you're specifically interested in Photoshop for web work, I recommend looking for a book that deals with that specific angle... there are a lot of photoshop books out there.
If you have internet access to newsgroups, you may want to check out comp.graphics.apps.photoshop (there is a lot of cruft, but some occasional gems).

There are also a lot of free tutorials on the web. Here are some of the ones I have bookmarked:
http://artlinks.home.att.net/ (also includes links to other tutorials)
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/98/20/index0a.html
http://www.planetphotoshop.com/

Pitfalls? Well, as long as your boss agrees to get you help so you're not overworked, the only drawback is that you're increasing your skills in a different direction, which could lead to web page design.

...pat.
