Another method that might be easier, and require less fiddling once you 
set it up:

Make your document a two-column document.

Make all non-table pgf formats paginate across all columns

Make the table-anchor pgf format *not* paginate across all columns

Always use a separate table-anchor pgf for each of the two tables

When you make two tables that are not wider than one column, they will 
be side-by-side.  IF the col-one table will be longer than the col-two 
table, you must make all rows in the longer table keep with previous... 
 That keeps the longer col-one table from breaking over to col-two.
