No argument there, but "less seriously" doesn't mean they'll completely ignore it. If I apply for a job at GM and I have no paid experience in the field, but I have rebuilt engines as a hobby for the last 10 years, I'd be foolish not to mention it. In my experience on the other end, it has made a difference to me and to others who were involved in the interviewing/hiring decision. Anything that shows an interest/aptitude in the subject area is an asset IMHO.

I could be wrong, but my impression is that many employers take
something listed as a hobby much less seriously than any paid work.
