In the FEW cases I have come across - always a big multi-national - this
situation, I have always sent a reply in writing to my boss for forwarding
to the HR dept. It states that before I started work there I have several
works in progress, published materials and am participating in several
productions. They smile, say "No prob" and nothing is a problem.

What they are trying to stop is the following (poor) example:

Joe Pen works for Shoot-em-games Inc (SEG). SEG release a new game, a month
later Joe releases a sequel HIMSELF. Now, where did he get that code and
training from...

Many companies have carefully written agreements that any work
you do for the company, whether on or off the premises, is considered the
property of the company.
