I can reply to your second inquiry (press, touch, or select) with some help
from the archives:

(dusting off a previous message, with some newbies added so that it is not
completely redundant)

As with everything, it depends upon your audience:

Religious: Lay hands upon the X icon...

Medical: Palpate the X icon...

Kinky: Lick the X icon... (also, see Explorers)

Parent: Wipe the X icon with a moist towellette to get the peanut butter
off...

Single-celled Organisms: Extend a pseudopod towards the X icon...

Explorers: Probe the X icon...

Dancers: Tap the X icon...

Psychiatrist: Depress the X icon... (oh, wait, that doesn't work)

Road Crew: Stand around and watch the X icon until something happens.
(hey, I have family that do road work, so I am entitled)

Or, you could just go with the utterly boring "Select..." or "Touch..."

Jason
