Yes, it is illegal to *ask* and it is illegal to base a hiring decision
on the answer. But when the information is offered, it is human nature
to use it.

I never said the secular humanist had any input into the decision-making
process.

Also, I'm talking about a situation many years ago when hiring laws
were very different and resumes were very different. When I first
learned to construct a resume, I learned to put in a section that
included height, weight, age, marital status, health assessment, ...
Times change. However, no matter how benign or beneficial you believe
the information to be, there is always a black to your white, a stop
to your go -- someone who believes the information is detrimental.
