... and then second year would be 201, 202, 203, etc.
Not so much "second year" but rather after proficiency in 100-level (first
level) material is demonstrated by either taking the 1xx course(s) or by
other means.
I recall having a beginning course numbered "114" for no reason I can
recall. Also "100," which might have been a way of saying there is not
follow-on because all introductory material can be presented in one academic
period.
Yes, it can be called "silly," but anyone with university experience of this
knows instantly the meaning of this shorthand. A bit related to the current
poll question, yes? Interesting to learn this shorthand is not yet
multicultural.
