TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
> What about you? Has your writing ability improved or declined since
> you've become a professional technical writer?
(wow, is this subjective :)
I feel that my writing has improved. Moreover, I feel that my verbal
communication skills have improved. Writing grammatically correct
documentation day-in and day-out has led to my thought process
being more "grammatically correct". Also, when I am putting my
thoughts down on paper, I tend to use a more varied vocabulary
than in every-day conversation, and once again, this aspect of
writing has carried over into my verbal communication with others.
> Have you ever been horribly embarrassed to read something you wrote
> years ago?
I've never been embarrassed to read anything I previously wrote (at
least not technical documentation :), but there are things that I look
at and realize I would do differently now (i.e., overall approach in a
help file for an application).
