I also do not buy into reducing or removing text formatting because
some people don't like the effect. I don't do it for effect and to
be honest, effect is in the eyes of the beholder. What may be an
effect to a critic might be visual clues for the reader.

As Christine said, people don't read the page...they scan the page.

Anything I can do to help them zero in on a paragraph involving a
screen element, key, or command, the more useful the document,
