Those who have been belittling technical communication programs as vo-tech have obviously never taken any upper level classes and definitely haven't taken any at a graduate level. There is plenty of high-end material in the field, but you are not going to get to it by taking a 101 course any more than you would get a good understanding of music theory from taking a music appreciation class.
