Chapter 1 ? About This Book
This is a work of fiction about a police investigation. In it, you will find clues, character development, plot twists, and several serial commas.

The clues include:
1. the lady of the title (Miss Vanessa Enthwistle)
2. a single slipper (also of the title)
3. the murder weapon (a computer hard drive)
4. a female police detective (promoted to first grade, see Chapter 2)
5. her boss (gets his comeuppance, see Chapter 9)
6. diagrams of the murder scene (swanky apartment), a farm kitchen, and a police lockup

By the end of Chapter 11, you will be able to deduce the identity of the murderer (victim?s ex-boyfriend/landlord).

Turn to page 4 to begin Chapter 1. Fast readers can skip ahead to Chapter 2, where the body is discovered in her apartment with a dough hook clasped in her hand.
