That sounds like urban legend material ("It happened to a friend..."), but I
can tell you first-hand that it is true.

I was hired as the first tech writer at our dot-com. A former project
manager quit (not fired), and was so angry over the situation that he was in
(a really long legal story) that he wiped out a hard-drive on his way out. I
came in to find almost no documentation left about our product and literally
started from scratch. (One document I had to work with was written by a
programmer, and contained no capital letters or punctuation -- but that's a
whole different thread).
