While layoffs by project may not, strictly speaking, be the fairest way
of doing things I see on positive (if that's the word) aspect from the
aspect of the person being laid off. You've been laid off and you feel
absolutely terrible about it - how much worse would you feel if you
were laid off not because you were unlucky (your project got scrapped)
but because management thought you weren't as good as others at the job
(not dead wood but you just weren't as good as those kept on)? In
addition, when applying for new jobs I think it looks a little better to
be able to say that the last job went due to recession and my project
got cut than to say they cut back and only kept the best. Cold comfort I
know but it's a thought.
