Asking to help with the manuals was my first step out of secretaryhood to being a technical writer.

Yes, it can seem demeaning to get "The Help's" permission before a document goes out, but consider me one more vote that you should welcome her as a proofreader. Everyone needs a good proofreader. And just maybe she's trying to become your peer, not your boss.
