What about using a vertical bar? One bar (|)could indicate a space, as
in:

codecode|code||code|||

I would guess that an underscore would be almost as
hard to distinguish as an actual space (they run
together). Why not either a distinguishable symbol
(octothorpe?) or perhaps open and closed square
brackets per space ([]=1 space, [][]=2 spaces)?
