I'm going to get out of lurking mode to tell this story.
At a company I once contracted at (name withheld to protect the guilty)
another writer fought bitterly with an engineer over the correct
terminology for a part described in the manual she was writing. The
engineer insisted that she use the official technical nomenclature: Air
Moving Device (with the acronym AMD). My writer friend wanted to call it
what is was: a fan.
The engineer won. Since he was also the technical approver, "fan" was
officially banned from the manual.
