I say positive phrasing.

To me, "You can't assign an item to more than one group" suggests a
weakness of the product--unless your purpose is to reassure the users
that they can't inadvertently assign an item to more than one
group--whereas "you can assign an item to only one group" simply states
a fact about the product's functionality.

BTW, functionality should probably be another of the banned words :)
