Can anyone recommend a book/website/publication that provides various sample layouts/formats for technical documents? I've been tasked to improve "the look" of the docs in our technical library.

Better yet, look through a number of manuals, and pick out the ones that you find easiest to use and read. Then try to figure out what features made you chose them, and try to incorporate those features into your documents. It would probably be quicker to find an existing template or set of standards, but, this way, you'll learn more about design, and add some valuable knowledge to your repetoire.
