Re: Freelance ethical dilemma
I've been getting calls from my previous contact there, asking me
to work on projects which are firmly in their marketing writer's territory
and capabilities. [snip] Has anyone
else dealt with a similar situation, as a freelancer or contractor?
Yes <shudder>.
In my case, my old company contact called me directly because the new in-house writer kept telling him that his pet projects would have to wait because other jobs had priority. I didn't know that, and didn't have the sense to ask either the new writer or her boss. I just kept happily doing the work and mailing my invoices. A kind soul clued me in---*after* I lost the contract. Messy, messy, messy.
My suggestion:
Set up a joint meeting with both the new marketing writer and the guy who's bugging you. Do this immediately. Notify both of them *and their manager(s)* that you are suspending work on the extra projects until there is agreement on responsibilities and priorities.
I hope your situation is resolved more amicably than mine was.
