Let me relate a little story. At my last  job, I worked alongside a woman
who never attended any of these functions. Her reasoning was that it was
work time, not social hour and therefore hard work and dedication were all
she needed. When duties were re assigned in a huge reorganization, she was
bumped to the bottom of the totem pole; assigned all the menial work.
Despite the fact that she did exceptional work, she was perceived as having
an attitude ( read: not a team player ) and nobody wanted her reporting to
them.
