If I had to break down a tech writers time into percentages it might look
like this:

2% Planning / arguing over fonts / learning tools
50% Learning technologies / interacting with SMEs
25% Head down, butt in chair, banging out text
20% Editing and tweaking
3% Administrative stuff

25% for writing?????? and 50% for learning technologies/interacting with
SMEs???? If only I'd had that kind of luxury.

I've never had a contract position where I've spent 50% of my time learning
technologies and interviewing SMEs. It has been more like 60% banging out of
text and 15% intereacting with SMEs and learning the technologies I am
documenting. I definitely know I don't have that kind of luxury at the new
position I just started. I hit the ground running right after the interview.
