Someone said:
>It's unethical to allow my family to be hurt, to let my
>child starve or go without health care, if there's anything I can do to
>prevent it. That's ethics.

Bruce Byfield said:
>I've known a number of people who placed their principles before
>anything else, so let me play devil's advocate here: Isn't it also
>ethical to provide your children a high ethical standard?

Tom Murrell and I also discussed this offlist, and I should say onlist that
I have never been in a position where I had to choose between my principles
and providing for my family: I've never had to be a family-provider (except
for my cats :-). So I can't honestly say which I'd choose: it would make the
choice that much harder. Nor do I think anyone can be greatly blamed if
their choice is between their principles and starvation, homelessness, or
watching as someone they love dies.

But in principle <g> I hope I would make the choice not to allow anyone's
family to be hurt, not to allow any child to starve, or go without health
care, or be mutiliated, if there's anything I can do to prevent it. One
thing I can do along those lines is refuse to work in the "defense"
industries... and to me *that's* ethics: making a choice about what benefits
you will accept at what cost to others.

Apologies for the long additional sig: it is added automatically and outwith
my control.
