At Informix, back in 1994/5, we were developing a database front-end
tool that would run on Unix or Windows. The screens did not look the
same on the two platforms, but were very similar. Rather than publish
two complete versions of each manual, we had the production department
create a tool kit of image pieces, and created our own approximations
of each screen. The illustration of a screen did not exactly copy
either appearance, but was similar enough to enable users to navigate
on either.

All,

SHORT VERSION

1) Do you create your own "fake" screen-caps with
a vector-drawing tool?

2) Can you think of any reasons not to do so, from
the user's perspective?

3) Would I be wrong in assuming that cosmetic aspects
of windows and dialog boxes are not that important,
and that as long as the text is there and readable,
and the surrounding elements are similar to the
originals, then that should be "good enough"?
. . .
