I listened to an interesting discussion last week, at a meeting of computer
consultants (mostly programming talent.)
The topic was "Virtual Teams." I have worked during the last year as part of
a virtual team, as a writer.
The main speaker presented himself as a team leader, who is hired to manage
virtual teams. He claimed that in the very near future we will only see
consulting work as a member of highly-specialized virtual teams. To staff
this, he only uses persons who have experience in a specific area or
industry.
The idea of requiring specific industry knowledge is not really new. I have
read thru past threads on Techwr-L which discuss this. It may be indicative
of a future trend, but it could be something we have seen before -- a poor
economy where recruiters and businesses set stringent requirements.
I dropped the speaker a line, letting him know of my availability as a tech
writer. I have very diverse experience, and have always seen this as an
asset. In fact, the current virtual project leader picked me because I have
diverse interests, and experience with systems and networks.
I wonder if this topic interests anyone on the list, and how you would
answer a very simple question like the following:
