As professionals, what do you think about the opportunities to do this kind
of writing for a person of my age and without any formal experience? Any
thoughts on how to pursue this would be appreciated.

In many parts of North America, this is a poor time for finding work as a technical writer. And, as you probably know, with so many of the writing jobs in high-tech, you may face some age discrimination, too, especially in newer companies and startups. Still, if any improvement happens at all, the demand for writers is likely to be greater than the people to fill them. I'd say that, if you persevere for six months to a year, you should be able to make the transition. If you're organized and have a bit of luck, you could reduce that time by half or two-thirds.

A good place for you to start would be this list's web site, www.raycomm.com. You'll find all sorts of information on getting started in the various articles.

Good luck!
