Bruce says, "I'd say that, if you persevere for six months to a
year, you should be able to make the transition. If you're organized and
have a bit of luck, you could reduce that time by half or two-thirds."

When I did my big career change (education to tech writer), it took me six
months to get my break. I had to settle for a much lower salary than I
wanted (about 2/3 of what I was asking for, and half of what I now make).
If you can handle a lot of rejection, though, it is well worth it.

One thing that I did was create my own website. It is not very fancy, but
my resume is now searchable online. I had one person invite me in for an
interview, and started out by saying, "I don't think you have the skills we
are looking for, but I just wanted to meet someone who could write that many
WebPages with no misspellings!"
