One reason the online world uses "content provider" is that Web writers often have to produce audio, video, interactive elements (polls, quizzes), links, the occasional bit of HTML or JavaScript, and so on. You can provide content without being a writer, but most content provider jobs do include writing and/or editing in the mix.

However, back in my producer days when I was hiring my staffs, I looked at resumes from "writers" as well as from "content providers." I figured if you can write, you can learn the other stuff.
