and surrounding elements than between list items). The other occasion we
use it is for space after tables, which Word also doesn't allow for.
Allen says:
I don't believe this is a valid reason to use extra paragraphs (hard
returns) in a document. All you need to do is define different styles for
the lists themselves. For most lists, I define two (and sometimes three)
styles. One style is for the main body of the list, with six points after
each paragraph. Another style is for the last element in the list, with
twelve points after the paragraph. You could also define a third for the
first element in the list, with additional space before the paragraph.
