I often have had two monitors hooked up when I was working with code and
documents (code on one and documents on another).

I have had a TV as well (running app on the tv, code of the app on one
monitor and then Framemaker on the other)

Lately I have used a LinkSys switch with my sun and pc connected to the same
monitor, but I really isn't the same.
