On the male side of this - guys who don't want to cut their hair.

My brother has hair all the way down his back (yes, I'm jealous of it). He
keeps it neatly in a braid. When he moved from working on ships (he's a master
engineer) to working on land in power plants many places wanted him to cut his
hair. He turned down three jobs because their only requirement was to cut his
hair. They expressed concern for safety - he countered with a 0 accident/0
lost days safety record for himself and the engine rooms he worked in (which
is rare in the industry regardless of hair). He doesn't meet with customers.
He keeps it safely secured under a hat (he wraps it almost bun like under a
bandana and work hat). (side note - this is how the women in the plant also
kept their long hair they were permitted to have.) He refused to comply and
said thankyou anyway. They told him to call back if he decides to cut his
hair.

The result - he had to settle for a job that was less in all ways than he
deserved. It's taken him over two years to finally get the job at the level he
deserves managing a plant. He kept his hair, but he had to make the sacrifice
in order to wait it out.

Was this right? no. Was it legal? no. Could he have probably sued? yes. And
won? highly unlikely. So unfortunately, yes: reality is reality.
