Here's a reason that someone could claim to be an expert Word user and have
a Word resume not up to your expectations:
That person uses Word expertly at work and does not have MS Word at home,
but expecting HR people to want Word versions of the resume does a "Save As"
into Word format from the alternate word processor (at home).
That person may have even used styles, etc. to define layout in this other
word processor, but the conversion process changed all that. My
recommendation for people in this situation is to "Save As" into Word95
format if possible, because you can then preview the document in WordPad
(assuming you are working from home on MS Windows).
Personally, I consider myself a Word expert. I use styles in Word, as Sharon
would expect. I code macros to save myself time, and also to create toolbars
in templates to make it easy for non-writers to create well-formed documents
and write according to guidelines.
But I don't have MS Word at home, and I wouldn't work on my resume at work.
