Actually, I am not judgmental about it, Andrew - just sad. I agree with your
previous posts about technical ability being really important and in my
experience, one of the ways I can quickly gauge someone's technical ability
is how they use their tool. And this resume does not show me a mind that
looks to see how to use his tools to his best advantage. I see a lack of
curiosity, which makes me sad.
Yes, I may miss a great writer. Always possible. But I have to tell you,
after nearly 10 years of teaching, this holds out pretty much the case. If
an experienced tech writer does not know how to use their tools, they
struggle with so much else they are unhappy working with us. My group is
pretty technical and actually understands the technology we work with -
tools and projects.
Now, a new writer with a strong technological background and a badly
formatted resume I can work with.

| Anybody who manages sets expectations for the people they work among. As
| the owner of your company you have a right to establish the criteria you
| use to hire people. Provided you don't discriminate over race, creed, sex,
| etc. you can reject people for any reason you want. I own a firm too and I
| do the same thing.

| If you want to be judgmental - be judgmental. I certainly understand the
| argument. I think what has people on edge is how you're trying to sugar
| coat it and make it sound like you're "doing the right thing".

| If you hire, you set the standard. The right thing is to pick people that
| meet your expectations. If styles are a criteria - fine. Those of you that
| don't like it - don't apply for work there. The employer has a right to
| establish work criteria.

| Now are those criteria stupid? That's debatable. But if Sharon and others
| are having luck using that as a filtering mechanism...then more power to
| them.
