As someone who taught English to 7th and 8th graders for 10 years back in
the 60's and 70's, originally we always used the apostrophe for acronyms
and for numbers (60's and 70's). However, in more recent times, the
apostrophe has been eliminated. My husband is a proofreaer for a law firm
and they never use the apostrophe in those cases anymore - nor do I in my
techical writing.
