If I am correctly intuiting the reason the term is even in question, it has to do with the way an apartment building is organized (as a metaphor for some data structure, IIRC). If this is true, condominium would be the wrong term anyway. Condominium is a legal concept having to do with form of ownership. There are condominium shopping centers; condominium detached housing subdivisions; timeshare condominium single housing units, boats, and RVs; etc. Condominium is not a modern synonym for apartment. So apartment would indeed be a better term to use.
