Chapter numbers do more than set a hierarchy; they define the location of
information in your book.

If it's really important to you to stress that the book is NOT a work that
needs to be read front-to-back, tell them so. Write an intro or a forward
or an "about this book" section or whatever.

But leave the chapter numbers in. It will make the book more
user-friendly, and will allow people to locate pertinent information much
more easily.

Just take deep cleansing breaths, and think of the numbers as navigational
aids, rather than literary chains of oppression.
