I don't think it is lack of imagination. I think it is because that isn't
the way people got jobs in the go-go past. What worked in the past isn't
working now, so folks have to change their strategy, their mindset. There IS
an unknown job market out there, but most don't have the skills or knowledge
to tap it.

I have one friend who is a project manager who has been out of work for
months, and I see two other factors. One is that in the summer she turned
down a job in her field that didn't totally match her pay requirements,
hoping she could still get something better. Then after the attacks, she
was proved wrong. I call this factor "bad timing".
The second factor is the struggle against depression so many people have
when they are out of work. She is very creative and a go-getter when she is
"up", but the continued bad news tended to drag her down. During her more
down periods, she didn't really look for a job, thus losing valuable time.
