The way you've expressed it in your example, is "A." another way of saying
"1.1.1.1", or is "A." more like a subsection that would be repeated
throughout the document? For instance:

1.1 Books of the Old Testament
A. Genesis
A.1 Chapter One
A.2 Chapter Two
1.2 Books of the New Testament
A. Matthew
A.1 Chapter One
A.2 Chapter Two

Is easily done by using a different style for the "A" sections, and all you
have to do is restart the numbering anew under each section.
