Oops--I missed Geoff's as usual accurate analysis until now.

Re preps at the end of a sentence, I'd say go with what sounds smoother. Although I've never been a fan of doing extreme gyrations to get rid of that ending preposition, sometimes it just sounds better. And sometimes neither sounds right, which means rewriting the sentence.
