Terse agreement: Online until *final* copies. In practice this has meant
three prints IMHE. One to find a few last mistakes, fix and reprint. Then
niggle over a few more split hairs. Next is the one we nod sagely and say
"Mmmm, send it". Ideally, it'd per perfect from the online work. Nope, you
always need to change circumstance to stay fresh and that's hard to do
online.

Doug Grossman "vehemently disagreed" with the assertion that "Practically no
one edits on-line reliably. If you want to edit reliably
and thoroughly, print it out."
This depends on what you and the original poster meant. There's broad
consensus among editors that many of us (perhaps most) miss some things
online that we'd miss onscreen, and vice versa.
